From the Parents...

"My son is experiencing friendship for the first time. He is learning to handle the ups and downs of relating to others, and he is becoming more confident in himself."

"My son had so many negative experiences in the school system that he lost all interest in learning. Here, he has been nurtured, encouraged and challenged. He is now willing and able to learn for the first time in years, eager to make plans for his future, and finding skills in himself that he didn't know he had. He has friends and feels a part of a group for the first time—something he had totally missed out on in the past."

Admissions Information

Admissions Process

Families and students who are interested in this program will be considered based on the individual profile (developmental and learning/academic) of the student, the fit of the student with the other students, and the fit of the family as a whole with the other families in the program. The goal of the evaluation process is not to be exclusionary, but to make sure that the program can meet the needs of both the child and the family and continue to work well for all families involved. Elements of the evaluation process may include a developmental history and previous testing or other professional reports, but will also include, whenever possible, extended interviews and interactions in other, less formal contexts.

The Community School seeks students from all ethnic, cultural, racial, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds who can benefit from the program and make positive contributions to the community. In order to benefit from the school's program, a child must have a desire to build relationships with others and be able to participate in small group activities (with support from staff). A child must also be able to communicate his wants and needs to others.

After each step, the parents and the school must both agree to continue to the next step. Overall, we will make this process as collaborative as possible, setting the stage for what we expect to be an ongoing collaboration should your child attend the school. Ultimately, the school must make the final decision about whether a child can attend the program, but we recognize the in-depth knowledge parents have about their own children, and we want to use this as a tool in the admissions process.

In addition, when considering an applicant for admission, The Community School evaluates the overall fit of the family to the school community. An essential part of creating a successful experience for the student is the support the parents provide at home and to the school in general. Please read the Parent Responsibilities for more information about our expectations of families.

There is no simple way to determine if a given child is right for The Community School. We want to evaluate your child comprehensively. This process may include multiple visits individually and in a group setting. The process will be different for every family, but it will include, at a minimum, the following steps:

    • Discussion with Director of the school.
    • Parent visit to observe the school.
    • Completion of an application and submission of relevant reports and evaluations.
    • Individual interview with student and parents.
    • Student visit to the school, usually for an extended period (i.e., half or full day).

While enrollment normally takes place before the beginning of the school year, a student may be admitted during the school year if a vacancy exists.
